Review | It’s like an ‘Evita’ sequel — about her cadaver

The vamping of the Milanese corpses is egregiously campy. And when the embalmer gloats over a just-extracted liver (“firm as a melon!”), the ghoulish detail seems over the top. The conceptual linking of such morbid humor with the history of Argentina’s Dirty War might not win awards for good taste.

But the revised true-history musical “Momia en el Clóset (Mummy in the Closet): Evita’s Return” at GALA Hispanic Theatre is, at least, less tonally lurching than the 2009 original version. The creative team, including returning director Mariano Caligaris, has somewhat evened out the black comedy and better framed it with historical and political perspective, while making needed trims.
